Sale of Safeway.com.au to test new Australian used domain name rules
by Stewart Carter
Another marketplace for trading used Australian domain names has opened its doors, and
with safeway.com.au up for sale through its service, is attracting some attention.
Located at www.domaintradingpost.com.au, the marketplace is operated by by an accredited
domain name registrar, Melbourne based DiscountDomainNameServices
(www.ddns.com.au).
According to the web-site, there is no charge for listing names for sale in the marketplace.
Neither is there any commission payable on any sales.
“We simply work as an escrow agent and take care of the domain transfer from seller to buyer
for a flat fee.“
Top price for the Au domain names said to have already been sold through the marketplace is
$11,000 for forster.com.au
But many names are listed for sale at much higher prices, and notably safeway.com.au.
The owner/licensee is asking $500,000 for the name.
Whois shows ‘Rod Keys’ from Safe-Way Discount Hosting Services as the registered licensee
of the name.
However Safe-way Discount Hosting Services is not operating a hosting business at its web
address.
Instead the site advertises the name for sale.
Whether Rod Keys will be able to successfully transfer the name to a new owner is an
interesting question.
Clearly, giant retailer Safeways has an obvious interest in the name.
Arguably the retailer would have a good chance of securing the name if it tried.
But a person named Rod Keys is also the chief executive officer of DDNS.
If the Rod Keys who owns DDNS is one and the same as the Rod Keys who owns Safe-Way
Hosting Services, then he can be presumed to have a good acquaintance with the rules
surrounding domain name transfers.
