Whatsonsale.com.au targets shoppers who hunt for specials.

by Stewart Carter

Whatsonsale.com.au is gearing up for a 1st of September re-launch as an online service targeting shoppers who love specials and sales.

The site is already up and visitors are invited to sign-up to get emails from both online and traditional retailers promoting their specials and sales.
The service also hosts retailer catalogues on its web-site along with other online marketing and advertising services for retailers.
Founder and co-owner Pat Walsh told eCommerce Report the service is free to shoppers and pays its way from fees paid by participating retailers.
“We are a retail friendly portal that allows a retailer to post an ad that tells people whatsonsale in their store” he said adding that “the service is for markdowns and catalogues as well as general advertising message and links to websites.”
Walsh agreed that the service has some similarities to those offered by listed company Salmat, at www.Lasoo.com.au and by former advertising industry executive, Rob Wong, with www.cataloguecentral.com.au
But he said that Whatsonsale is not in direct competition with them.
“For the record, we do not see ourselves as competing with Catalogue Central and Lasoo.”
He said that whist those two are direct competitors and offer retailers essentially identical services, i.e putting retailers catalogues on line, Whatsonsale is something different again.
“Ours is a different model, a different customer base, and will offer more services”.
Walsh said that the display advertisements appearing in the Melbourne Age promoting the upcoming launch of the site reflected a recent change for public company status.
Part of this is new funding and new people involved including Bob Johnson a former CEO of Pacific Access (now known as Sensis).
He said that the service was already getting a good response from Internet users.
“Our users like the site as we bring information that is not simply letterbox dropped catalogues put on line, but can be specials from small and medium retailers who have not got the capacity to promote in mainstream press, radio, and the like."
"We send out newsletters and exclusive promotions to our registered users and our database is gaining numbers rapidly.”
Retailers too, like the service, he said.
“The value and feedback we have received from retailers big and small is fantastic, and we will be launching in Sydney as of Sept 1 with a new site look and feel offering a far more enhanced user and advertiser experience.”
